Lady Makers Prepare for State!
The Cozad Lady Haymakers are headed to State after a dramatic finish at the Class C-4 District Golf Tournament on Monday, Oct. 5, at Lakeside Country Club near Johnson Lake.
Cozad fired a team score of 390 to finish regulation tied with Adams Central for second place, setting up a playoff on Hole 18 to determine the district runner-up.
With a trip to State already secured as one of the top three teams, the Lady Haymakers still had unfinished business.
All five Cozad golfers headed back to the 18th hole for the playoff, where every stroke mattered. When the scores were tallied, the Lady Haymakers had edged Adams Central by a single stroke to claim the District Runner-Up plaque and cap off a thrilling day on the course.
Senior Ella Atchison led the Haymakers and put together one of the top rounds of the tournament. Atchison carded an 81 to finish as the individual District Runner-Up, nine strokes behind Minden sophomore Macy Jorgensen, who claimed the district championship with a 72.
Fellow seniors Emma Howerter and Morgan Mraz helped keep Cozad in contention throughout the day. Howerter finished with a 99, while Mraz was just one stroke back with a 100.
Sophomore Mollie Spradlin rounded out Cozad's four counting scores with a 110, giving the Haymakers their team total of 390. Sophomore Baylee Eldridge also competed for Cozad and finished the district round with a 116.
Grand Island Central Catholic captured the C-4 team championship with a 376. Cozad's playoff victory gave the Lady Haymakers the runner-up finish and another piece of hardware to bring home.
For Atchison, Howerter and Mraz, the district performance was a big one in their senior seasons, with all three contributing to the score that punched Cozad's ticket to State.
