A Week for Cozad's Littlest Learners

Cozad City Mayor Marcus Kloepping often receives thoughtful requests that he is more than happy to fulfill and last week was no different. Taking time on Good Friday, he proudly proclaimed April 11–17 as the Week of the Young Child, and further announced this during the town hall meeting of the city council.  

Hasbrouck Commits to Concordia Bulldogs

State wrestling champion Drake Hasbrouck signed his letter of intent to wrestle for the Bulldogs at Concordia University, Nebraska on April 1, where he plans to major in accounting. Joining Hasbrouck for the signing were, from left, his brother Chase, his mother Candi, and his grandfather Duane Mercer.

What is Parkinson's Disease?

Who hasn't tapped fingers on a desk with anxiety or shook a leg under a table awaiting some sort of news? These motor impulses may seem involuntary, but they largely are under the control of the individual. For a portion of the population, fidgeting and tremors are out of their control, and are  hallmarks of a movement disorder called Parkinson's disease.

Annual Women’s Health Luncheon Welcomes Back Local Specialist

Cozad Community Health System is excited to announce the 21st Annual Women’s Health Luncheon, taking place Thursday, April 23 at the Cozad Elk’s Club. This long-standing community event continues to bring women together for an afternoon of education, and inspiration. 
Doors will open at 11:30 a.m., with lunch featuring a chicken Caesar wrap and pasta salad. The program will begin promptly at noon and conclude at 1 p.m. 

Meet the Candidates Before You Vote

Residents will have a chance to meet local candidates ahead of the upcoming election during a public event set for April 14 at the Grand Generation Center. 
The “Meet the Candidates” gathering will begin at 5:30 p.m. and offers Cozad residents an opportunity to speak directly with those seeking office. This is a great opportunity to ask questions and learn more about each candidate’s priorities. 

Pack 187 Leads Highway Effort

Members of Cub Scout Pack 187, joined by several Scouts from Troop 1189 working toward community service hours, spent the day cleaning up more than two miles of Highway 21. 
The group collected 16 bags of trash along the roadway, making a noticeable impact on the area. Along the way, Scouts also encountered a few reminders of the outdoors, including a dead squirrel, two foxes, and an animal skull. 

Historic Win for Cozad FFA

The Cozad FFA Chapter made history at the 98th Annual Nebraska State Convention, as its floriculture team captured a state championship title and secured a spot in the national competition for the first time in program history. 

Chamber, CDC Focus on Growth

The Cozad Area Chamber of Commerce and Cozad Development Corporation held a joint annual meeting on March 19 at the Cozad Elks Club, where organization and community members gathered to recognize local impact, review the past year and look ahead to future growth. 

Cozad School Board Approves Preschool Proposals

The March Haymaker Highlight recognized pre-kindergarten special education teacher Karsyn Dugan during the  CCS Board of Education’s regular meeting on March 16. Dugan is the birth-to-age-five program coordinator. She explained the Early Development Network (EDN), which is free to families. “EDN includes health checks, premature births, CASA, foster care, and home visits. It’s a Nebraska thing,” Dugan said. 

City Council Approves Cell Tower

A public hearing on a tower permit request from The Towers, LLC, was held during the March 16 Cozad City Council meeting. The request was to install a wireless communication tower in the Southeast Quarter of Section 31, Township 11 North, Range 23 West in Dawson County, Nebraska. The tower will be built on property owned by Smoke and Deb Cornelius.

April is National Volunteer Month, and I want to take a moment to thank the people who keep things running here every day. Our home delivery volunteers, Mark Metzger, Mike Neil, Joyce Olds, Jane Jareske, Lily Corder, PJ Jacobson, Ron Erion, Bev Krushenisky, Vicki and Rob Prillaman, Bob Nutt, and George Williams, show up in all kinds of weather to make sure meals reach those who need them.
