Red, Write and Revolution
In 2026, America will celebrate the 250th anniversary of the American Revolution and the signing of the Declaration of Independence, and Cozad LOCAL wants to hear how local writers would tell that story.
Cozad LOCAL is inviting community members to participate in the Red, Write and Revolution Contest. If you can write, type, or text to speech, you are able to participate. There is no age limit!
Participants are encouraged to write a 300–600 word essay about the American Revolution and what it means to them. The goal of the contest is to allow Cozad’s community to explore history in their own way while sharing their thoughts locally.
Writers may approach the topic from many different angles. Essays might explore what the American Revolution would look like in today’s world, why the Declaration of Independence still matters, or how life might have been different for a teenager living in 1776. Participants may also choose to write a completely creative interpretation of America’s founding.
Creativity, historical insight, and even a little randomness are encouraged. Cozad LOCAL hopes to highlight the voices of local writers and storytellers in the community.
Writers will not be docked points for spelling or grammar, as the focus of the contest is creativity, storytelling, and personal perspective.
The deadline to submit is June 22, 2026. The winner will be announced in the July 2 issue of the LOCAL with their essay published.
Submissions may be sent by:
Email to liz@cozadlocal.com, or dropped off at the Cozad LOCAL, located at 121 W. 9th St., Suite D.
Each submission must include:
The writer’s first and last name and contact information.
The winning entry will be revealed in the July 2 edition of Cozad LOCAL, all other entries can be found on our website to be enjoyed.
The winner of the contest will be prized with $250 worth of fireworks.
The goal of the contest is to give Cozad’s community the opportunity to retell the story of the American Revolution in their own voices, whether thoughtful, creative, or unexpected.
Writers are encouraged to grab a pencil or keyboard, fire up their imagination, and take Cozad back to 1776.
Our community continues to show strong support of local journalism, and Cozad LOCAL extends sincere appreciation to our judges from Waypoint Bank, Homestead Bank, Security First Bank, Cozad Community Health Systems, Wilson Public Library, the Haymaker Creative District, Mayor Marcus Kloepping, and Hot Rockets Firework Barry Mraz.
Enjoy, participate, and be creative.
